Home Makeover: Quarantine Edition

Home Makeover: Quarantine Edition

If you’re not happy with the space you’re living in, having to stay at home can be a sad reality. But it doesn’t have to be! Quarantine is the perfect time to give your home a makeover, even while social distancing.

Are you over looking at the same four walls? Are you tired of wishing your home was decorated differently? Here are a few ways to redesign your space during quarantine to get the look you’ve been dreaming of:

Think about the style you want to bring to life

Before making any changes, decide what your style is. Don’t know what your style is? Create a Pinterest board! Search through different interior design pictures and save the elements you like — this will serve as your vision board. You can also look through Nouveau’s past projects for some ideas.

Paint a wall or walls

Simply painting walls can take a room from drab to fab. Come up with a color palette that suits your room. Does the space get a lot of natural light? Then it’s safe to play with a darker wall — maybe even try out Sherwin Williams 2020 Color of the Year— but remember that dark colors look best when accented with light ones. Does the space seem dark and dreary? Keep the walls light. Also take into consideration the furniture you plan to keep in the space — what colors will compliment those pieces?

Take items out of the space

It’s hard to envision redoing a room when the old version is staring at you. Take things out of the room to give yourself a blank canvas and then decide what you want to bring back into the area. This will also help you picture a new layout that might make more sense for the space.

Minimize clutter

Once everything is out of the room, identify the objects that will work in your room. It’s OK to not bring some things back in — maybe they fit better in another room or in someone else’s home.

Shop online

Now that you have a new vision for your room, you may need some new décor elements or furniture pieces. Just because you’re in quarantine doesn’t mean you have to wait to finish designing. Practice social distancing by finding items online that can be delivered right to your front door — bedding, wall accessories, area rugs, prints, lighting, furniture and more. But before you order, remember to measure your space and draw a layout of the room with the new furniture. You don’t want to delay your design process by ordering things that don’t fit.
